    V-Shaped Sharpening Slots:

    1. Insert knife blade into the V-shaped slots at a 90-degree angle to the sharpening blades or stones.

    2. Pull the knife blade straight back towards you while applying light pressure.

    3. Repeat this action until blade is sharp.

Tapered Diamond Rod / Flat Edges:

    1. Always hold the unit with the rod facing down. Place heel of the blade on the diamond rod closest to the unit.

    2. Hold blade at a 23 degree angle to the rod.

    3. While applying light pressure, push the knife away from you towards the end of the rod. Draw knife down so that the tip of the blade comes off the end of the rod. Repeat this action until blade is sharp.

    4. For the other side of the blade, you will need to switch hands holding the sharpener and the knife and repeat steps 1 - 3.

Tapered Diamond Rod / Serrated Edges:

    1. Only sharpen the side of your knife edge with the serrations.

    2. Hold rod at 23 degree angle to the blade and move it back and forth through each serration until sharp.

Always clean your sharpener with a damp cloth after use and towel dry. Do NOT rinse with water.

    It's Good for Something

    • Compact in size
    • Might be better if it was bigger
I generally don't have good luck with knife sharpening but I at least got some sort of beveling out of the Smith's Pocket Pal in a reasonable amount of time, which is more than I can say for a few other sharpeners I have used plus it is great to have a sharpener for serrated knives.

Big utility in a small package!

    West Lafayette, IN
    • Portable. Versatile. Effective.
    • Rattail get loose and dangles.
I have found this to be one of the most practical "little" utility tools in my collection. It is sturdy and the sharpening bits work really well. The carbide will straighten a rolled blade when used with a light touch and will remove a small irregularity or even out a small nick when used with some pressure. It WILL remove plenty of metal from a thin blade if you get aggressive, so be careful! The ceramic is fine enough to almost polish an edge, but has just enough bite to serve as a "fine" steel on a good knife with a fine edge. It'll remove a bur or straighten a bit of roll on an edge with not problem.
I really like the tapered (rattail) file and have used it on a variety of non-knife jobs and on irregularly shaped tools (even large fish hooks), but it is easy to change the shape of a serration valley of you are not careful.
The thumb depression make gripping the tool firmly and holding it against a tabletop, bench top, or log quite secure and sure makes for a nice improvement on the Lanky version of this tool. It is lighter than the Lanky, too. I need to pick up another to put into the utility drawer in my shop.

    • compact
    • handy
    • fails to place a decent edge on the bla
I use this sharpener mainly for my folding knives. I have repeatedly pulled each knife thru the slots, both coarse and ceramic. It removed the burrs of the blade yet doesn't sharpen the edge to a pleasing sharpness. I end up going to a sharpener service outlet where the edges are relatively sharp.

    Great Little Packit Shapner

I bought this sharpener for my stepson. He loves it. He does not have to worry about getting the right angles when sharping his knife.
