Smith's 8" Diamond Sharpening Rod features a unique sharpening surface with a overlapping oval hole design, which is coated with multiple layers of micron-sized monocrystalline diamonds. This innovation helps speed the sharpening process by collecting and holding the metal filings which ordinarily build up during the sharpening process.

    1. Hold handle of sharpener in one hand and knife in other hand. Place the tip on the end of the sharpener on a solid surface. Apply sufficent downward pressure on the sharpener, so it won't slip during the sharpening process.
    2. Place heel of your knife blade at the top of the sharpening rod at preferred angle. With consistent downward pressure, push the knife down the rod while pulling the knife towards you from heel to tip of the blade.
    3. Repeat step 2 on the other side of the knife blade
    4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 until knife is sharp
    5. CAUTION: Always do an equal number of strokes on each side to ensure the sharpest edge possible. The initial aggressive cutting speed of all diamond sharpeners will slow with use. At the same time, the abrasive finish will improve. Do not be confused by this break-in process: it is normal and should be expected. Your diamond sharpener is breaking in, not wearing out.

    • The only con is that you don't have one
I happened onto this sharpener by accident. It has been my go-to sharpener since then. This stick is as functional as any I have used. Push towards the edge and it takes off metal as needed depending on the pressure you apply. Pull away from the edge and the edge is fine-tuned and lined up. Hold the right angle and you can get a sharp knife for a very long time. I highly recommend this utensil to make and keep your knives as sharp as is humanly possible.

    Simple, Cheap, Sharp

Simple to use. Make sure you follow instructions keeping the blade at a tight angle to the rod. Super sharp.
