PLEASE NOTE:  1.)  Some of our first production pieces of this item did not have the slot labels "CARBIDE" and "CERAMIC" printed on them.  If you receive one of these pieces, we apologize for the inconvenience.  Please know that we have since corrected this issue and have included an image in the collection of product shots showing what the slot labels will look like for your reference.  If later you forget which slot is "CARBIDE" and which is "CERAMIC" on your product and can't reference the photo, use this rule as your guide.  The slot to the left of the PULL arrow (when the arrow is pointing toward you) is the CARBIDE (Coarse) slot.  The slot to the right of the PULL arrow is the CERAMIC (Fine) slot.

2.)  You can only pull the knife blade or fire starter through the slots in the direction indicated for the abrasive components to be effective.

3.)  The first time you use the fire stick you must remove the black protective coating from the rod before it will spark.  Simply pull the fire starter through the CARBIDE slot 2 or 3 times using light downward pressure to remove this coating.

  • love it!

Best sharpener ever. Fire starter works better than any one I've ever used. Whistle drive my dogs crazy. Compass works we'll for its size.

  • Perfect, light weight, and very functional

the sharpener is fantastic the compass works fair, the fire starter is outstanding the flashlight will light your way (dimly) at night, or would be great for signaling that you are in need of help, the only drawback is the whistle is not very loud, but for less than 15 bucks, this is a MUST HAVE!! oh and it fits perfectly inside my knifes sheath which is super cool.

It works perfectly for my Schrade 152OT leaves a long lasting razor sharp edge that will cut through anything. Whistle is loud as hell. Fire starter works perfectly. Needless to say I'll be using this sharpener for a long time!

I love the thought of having a backup (two is one, and one is none). This is a great product and to know I can order the replacement parts too is amazing, and at a reasonable price, I am a VERY happy customer. Great product!! BTW just a quick thing don't use the compass mine was bad off, only gripe. BUT buy this and you won't regret it!

  • Not bad.

Gets my knives sharp in just a few seconds. The fire starter and compass both work very well. The whistle isn't very loud but I doubt i'll ever use it anyway. The only disappointment was the flashlight. Mine came with a dead battery and there doesn't appear to be any way to change it.

  • Pretty good

I got this mainly because it is a neat little survival kit that will fit in the sharpener pocket in my knife sheath.

All the sharpeners work great, keep a nice edge on my carbon steel knife blade.

Compass works, even if it isn't the most accurate. Will keep me going in a straight line when needed.

Firestarter is awesome, and nice to have in a little package like this.

Flashlight is a little dim compared to most you see today. Disappointing that the battery can't be changed out, but this type of battery should last many years for emergency needs.

I give this item a 4.75. I really want to give this item 5 stars. I went to Chiapas, Mexico for a year and I used it constantly. It's so compact...I always kept in in the watch pocket of my jeans. The light is a little dim but, in contrast, when it's dark and you have nothing, it's bright enough. I was always glad to have that feature when I needed it. It's a great asset and a step above the original pocket pal sharpener. I keep one in my glove box, one for home use, and one in my bug out bag.

Why not 5 stars??? Some changes/additions I would love to see if it didn't change the size:

    1) Brighter Light 2) Access to change battery for light. 3) A knife blade (Even if it is small. To gut fish, shave tinder, etc.) 4) No screws. If a knife blade is added you're going to want to keep it sharp. Currently the ceramic & carbide sharpeners are a separate module and are removable from the unit but are held in with a small screw. It would be nice to be able to remove the sharpening module at will.
