Smith’s new “Pocket Pal” Multi-Functional Knife Sharpener features pre-set crossed carbides and ceramic stones, which provide the “Perfect Edge” every time. Carbides provide quick edge setting, and the specially shaped ceramic stones are designed to give you a razor sharp edge on either standard or serrated edges. A fold out, tapered round, diamond coated rod is designed for sharpening serrations and small gut hooks. Unit is compact, lightweight, durable, and comes with a lanyard hole.
- Tapered Round Diamond Coated Rod for Sharpening Serrated and Standard Edges
- Carbide Blades (Coarse CARBIDE Slot) Quickly Set Your Edge
- Ceramic Stones (Fine CERAMIC slot) Give You a Razor Sharp Edge
- Reversible and Replaceable Carbide and Ceramic Stones for Extended Sharpening
- Lanyard hole for Carrying
- Preset Sharpening Angles provide Guaranteed Results
Carbide Blades (COARSE) - Set the edge. The carbide blades provide quick edge setting capability for dull or damaged knives. These blades are designed for use on straight edges only, and are reversible and replaceable.
Ceramic Stones (FINE) - Finish the edge. Ceramic stones provide a smooth, polished edge for already sharp knives and can be used on serrated or standard blades and are reversible and replaceable.
Abrasives: Tapered Diamond Rod: MEDIUM (400 Grit) /Carbide Pull-Through slot: COARSE/ Ceramic Pull-Through slot: FINE (800 Grit)
V-Shaped Sharpening Slots:
1. Insert knife blade into the V-shaped slots at a 90-degree angle to the sharpening blades or stones.
2. Pull the knife blade straight back towards you while applying light pressure.
3. Repeat this action until blade is sharp.
Tapered Diamond Rod / Flat Edges:
1. Always hold the unit with the rod facing down. Place heel of the blade on the diamond rod closest to the unit.
2. Hold blade at a 23 degree angle to the rod.
3. While applying light pressure, push the knife away from you towards the end of the rod. Draw knife down so that the tip of the blade comes off the end of the rod. Repeat this action until blade is sharp.
4. For the other side of the blade, you will need to switch hands holding the sharpener and the knife and repeat steps 1 - 3.
Tapered Diamond Rod / Serrated Edges:
1. Only sharpen the side of your knife edge with the serrations.
2. Hold rod at 23 degree angle to the blade and move it back and forth through each serration until sharp.
Always clean your sharpener with a damp cloth after use and towel dry. Do NOT rinse with water.

I bought this sharpener for my stepson. He loves it. He does not have to worry about getting the right angles when sharping his knife.

Well this is the second time I've written a review on the Pocket Pal. And still never shows up. I purchased my Pocket Pal from Walmart a couple of years ago and the first time I opened the Phillips screw to clean out debris on the edges the plastic just broke off over the ceramic side. And while I know I can purchase the replacement ceramic/carbide edges when I need to- Why did the plastic just break off over the ceramic side? And I notice that the edge blades themselves rust rather easily. So I guess I'll just purchase another one.But the plastic seems rather flimsy.
Great when it works.

I liked this sharpener- A lot. That is until I decided to unscrew the screw to clean out the Ceramic pieces side and the plastic just broke apart when trying to slide the plastic piece up and out. I purchased this at Walmart and have had Smith's products in the past. I'm not sure why the plastic broke. I expected it to last longer. And yes 2+ years use was a plus- Oh well. And to make it worse- Walmart doesn't carry these any longer. Was great while it lasted.
Very Handy Tool

I keep this on the kitchen counter right next to where I do any cutting. Right at arms reach to touch up a knife when needed. I've had this product for several years now, no problem. I would buy again and recommend to others.
GREAT LITTLE PEACE!! VERY HANDY ON THE GO

Great little knife sharpener. I keep it on my key ring so it's always with me. My only complaint is how disappointed I was when I opened the package and read on the plastic "Made in China " we need the jobs here! I see several complaints about the plastic breaking, mine hasn't yet, but I don't use the sharpening rod. I would gladly pay twice what I paid for this thing just to see "made in USA " and know that I'm holding a quality product.

Great little sharpener. Had right hand sewed up 5 times in the last 6 hunting seasons at the VAMC. I am left handed. Where can you get the little stones for the hand held sharpener. I really like the hand held sharpener.
Great sharpener, unbelievable price.

As an Idaho hunter with lots of opportunities I have averaged 2-3 deer elk per year. Many hunts are far from roads. Even the best knife benefits from sharpening a couple times while skinning and quartering a large animal. A lightweight sharpener is a must. Smiths PP1 is outstanding. I have had mine for a year and it is still going strong. Even if i needed a new one every year, the price can't be beat.
Great Tool for casual users who don't shave with their knives.
Posted by B.R.G. on 07/21/2014
This little sharpener works well enough for a usable edge. Most casual users do not buy an expensive knife. Many, myself included will buy good brands for under $100. Don't give a hoot if we loose it. It will sharpen serrations and straight blades for anyone, helps inexperienced users when they need it. Inexpensive if you loose it or break it. Can be purchased in most retail stores. Great for edc, hiking and survivor knifes. Easy to carry.

I really happy to have this pocket tool to gives my whole knifes collection (18) the clean sharpness just I allways wanted. Thank you for your designers. Regards buddies.
A nice find for backpacking

One of the challenges faced by Boy Scout leaders is balancing weight with functionality when if comes to backpacking equipment. This sharpener lets me keep our knives safely sharp on the trail without adding any significant weight to the pack load. I bought this on a whim and have been very pleased with the ease of use and how quickly it puts a very sharp edge on a knife.
I feel comfortable recommending this to the scouts and adults in my troop.
Great little sharpener

What is the angle the Carbide and ceramic stones are set at?
Posted by JasonH on 10/18/2013
I have had this sharpener for about 3 years and use it in my kitchen for my Henkel knife collection. Very happy with the product. Just wondering when I should replace it. I use it to sharped about 10 knives every 3 months. Jason

Pocket Pal SKU 50269

When I attempted to close the serrated blade rod it broke at the end of the threaded portion. This was just the 2nd or 3rd time I had used it in the locked position since buying it. No other problems with this, or any other Smith product. I agree with what others have said about a bad batch of plastic.
Not a review but....

Looks super. I want it. And a few for my nephews...but what angle is it set to?
The sharpening angle on the Pocket Pal Knife Sharpener is set at 22.5 degrees per side (or 45 degrees combined).
Well thought out and works - great value

I love a sharp knife but am not skilled honing one. No matter how hard I try, the edge is always mediore when I'm done. I've used whetstones, chefs steel, multi-disc sharpeners and crossed ceramic rods. Didn't have much hope for this unit but the price was right on Amazon so I got one. Well, very pleasant surprise! Not only does it do a very credible job with less than a minute reading instructions, but it's nicely engineered ergonomically and seems well made for the price. Simple features like a lanyard hole and a detent to hold the diamond rod open show good attention to detail.
It's almost perfect for me - just one suggestion for improvement and that's to make a model ever so much smaller so it fits in the shapening pocket of my Ontairo Pilot's Survival Knife. I'll email Sales a photo when I get a chance.
HANDY SHARPENER FOR SERRATED BLADES

Use this one mainly on my serrated blades. Like the idea i can replace the carbides and ceramics. Have not found correct part numbers to order replacements yet.
Best Sharpener I have used Beats Gerber (bear Grills) Survival Hands Down
Posted by James on 04/18/2013
I had one of these and it worked flawlessly but I lost it so I thought Id Get the Gerber Bear Gryls Survival Sharpener for like $20 what a waste worst tool sharpener ever.
This one is SO cheap and works so well I am still kicking myself for wasting money and not just buying another one of these. I have not dealt with CS yet to see if I can get replacement Carbides and Ceramics but I have seen them listed. That's another Thing Gerber does not even have replacement Carbides or Ceramics. I am staying with Smith Items from now on out and am very happy with this Item.
Handy little gadget

I'm pretty big into always having a surgical sharp blade, what good is a dull knife? This little guy is pretty much all you need for putting on an edge on the fly. I use it on a pretty regular basis and only gave it 4 stars instead of 5 cause i'm sure somewhere somehow somewho there's a way to make it better, all in all a good little edger

Best little sharpener ever!

Puts a perfect edge on my knives in no time. The fold-out diamond spike is very aggressive and is perfect for serrated blades - otherwise it would take forever on a bread knife. Awesome product.
Broke within 2 days!
Posted by Michael on 02/12/2013
I purchased this sharpener with high hopes of sharpening my serrated edge knifes with beautiful precision. Unfortunately, the file used for just that broke right off as I began to close it up a couple days ago. I can't find any where to report it on the site nor can I seem to find a number. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
